We went over to give Smudge his fluids and spend some time with him. Unfortunately, it was just give fluids no cuddle time. As much as it hurts, I think that Smudge now associates me with going to the V-E-T. I tried to help give the fluids, but Smudge just seemed to get stressed out by my presence. When I left it to Grandma and the Wife, Smudge seemed to calm right down. Do I blame him? No. I was the one who took him to all those sessions at the V-E-T. I was also away with work so really the only time Smudge saw me was when he had to go get poked and prodded.
He is starting to look and feel better. He is still on the skinny side, but he does eat nearly a full can of the special food, which is a huge improvement. Grandma says that he and Chloe play together constantly so I know his mental well being is being taken care of as well as his physical. I think Grandma is worried I am going to take her new little boy away. She tells me over and over again how happy Smudge is and how well he gets along with Cloe, and how the two of them curl up together and sleep on the bed side by side.
Do I miss my Smudge? With every breath, I think about him. Am I happy without him? It is a bittersweet happiness I feel, for I know that he is happy and well loved and slowly stabilizing his condition, but I still feel that empty spot on the bed where he would curl up and fall asleep next to me.
It's good noos dat Smudge is eating furry well an playing wiv Cloe. She is furry purrty.
ReplyDeleteWe are sorry to heer dat he won't cuddle wiv yoo cuz he

it's so hard sometimes to do the right thing. but you know it's best for your beloved Smudge. (doesn't make it any easier, though, i know). we hope he stabilizes and lives a long time with his Grandma and his new buddy.
ReplyDeleteMs. Chloe is a furry purrty kittie. Nice and floofy.
ReplyDeleteOf course your heart aches for Smudge. Think of this as a child going away to live on their own. You still love them, they still love you. But he now has his own life.
May he live long and well at Grandma's.
What a beautiful cat. Are you sure smudge doesn't think that you might take him home? That could be the reason he is not cuddling up to you, not that he is mad at you.
ReplyDeleteCloe is so pretty. Just look at that mane!
ReplyDeleteWe are very glad that Smudge is doing better. We know that you miss him, but it sounds like you are doing the right thing for him.
we're sorry you're missing Smudge so much and we're sending you cuddles and purrs from all 3 of us House Panthers.
ReplyDeletethank you for the pictures of Cloe. she's a gorgeous fluff - whiskers in two colors, that lovely tail, and all that purrty fur. just beautiful!
I feel such sadness for you. I know it's a duel edged sword what you're feeling. I'm so happy to hear that he's doing better and I hope he'll come around soon. :)
ReplyDeleteMiss Chloe is very beautiful. I am glad that Smudge found a good friend at Grandma's house.
ReplyDeleteMiss Chloe is a beautiful little girl!
ReplyDeleteSmudge probably gets excited when he see's you cuz he loves you so much and misses you.
Chloe is so pretty, no wonder Smudge wants to hang out over there!

We are so sorry you are missing Smudge! Hopefully one of the other felines will take a special liking to you to fill that space on the bed....and maybe a bit of space in your heart!
ReplyDeleteOh...and Miss Chloe is a very floofy and purrty cat!
ReplyDeleteWow! *Whistles* Miss Chloe is gorgeeeeous! I wouldn't want to leave her eifur.

I'm glad to hear that Smudge is doing better and that he is enjoying himself at
ReplyDeleteGrandma's. I know that you miss him very much; but, my friend, you put Smudge's needs ahead of your own. As the others have said, a really hard decision to have to make. I think that many people could *NOT* have made the choice you have.
On the bright side, you know that he is loved and happy where he is at. He has a friend to play and snuggle with. And, you can visit him.
As for Cloe, she's a real cutie.
Thank you for giving everyone an update on Smudge and the image of Cloe.

i can see why smudge likes to be around chloe. she is gorgeous and i bet she has smudge wrapped around her paw. they apparently needed each other to get them through this time in their lives.
ReplyDeleteyou have given the ultimate sacrifice, letting someone go that you loved so very much so they would have a chance to fluorish. i also will keep you in my prayers as you heal from your "loss".
Chloe is a beauty. Wow.
ReplyDeleteYou are all in our prayers, too.
Chloe is looking very sweet. all my best wishes are with you.
ReplyDeletetake care
God Bless
Chloe looks like a lovely cat and we are happy to hear that Smudge is doing well. Purrs to you though as this seems to be far harder on you than on him.
ReplyDeleteI wish that this story had a totally happy ending ... how hard it must be for you to miss your beloved Smudge ... even though you know in your heart of heart that what you sacrificed was for his own best interest.
ReplyDeleteThe next best thing, is that you are able to see him regain his health with the love and patience of his Grandma and new friend Miss Chloe.
I will continue to hold hope that he will to heal and that you will also.
Purrs to you both

It's hard to be away. Perhaps if you were the one to give him treats and love after the fluids, he would start to calm down more. I know that when we had to give Ralphie fluids and take him back and forth to the v-e-t, he started to associate being held with going to the v-e-t. So, after the fluids every day, we gave him baby food (w/o the onion powder) and wrapped him in his favorite towel, and he started to calm down. - Meezer Mom
ReplyDeleteI am glad that Smudge is doing so well. It must be heartbreaking for you that Smudge associates you with going to the vet, though. I know you must miss him terribly, but you know that you did the right thing for him. Cloe is a beauty and it's wonderful that Smudge is helping her overcome her shyness. Maybe the two of them need each other right now.
ReplyDeleteChloe is vary byootiful and hairy. She sort of has a Fabio harestile. I wish I had big hare like that!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad Smudge is doing better, but am so sad yoo can't live with him rite now. sigh.
Your new friend is furry beauuuutiful Smudge. We are glad you are doing okay. ~Merlin, Shadow, Ko Ko
ReplyDeleteChloe is very beautiful. Skeezix is right about the Fabio hair!
ReplyDeleteBest wishes to Smudge every day!
