We got word from the V-E-T about Smudge's tests. The results were not good.
His creatinine levels were 3 times the normal and his urine is extremely concentrated. Unfortunately, these are both signs of chronic kidney failure.
I have to pick up some information from the V-E-T today and then arrange for another consultantation with him to determine the treatment options.
We always figured that, barring stupidity on our part and letting a cat get out, we would lose Smudge first due to his rough start in life. We just hoped that he would be with us for at least ten or more years.
I'm sorry, but that crack you just heard was my heart breaking...
I am so sorry to hear about Smudge. I hope there are treatment options that can help with the problem.
ReplyDeleteWe're so sorry to hear about Smudge. We hope the vet can help.

He was diagnosed with CRF 4 years ago, and he's still doing fine. Our gramma make sure he drinks lots of water and eats special food. That nice Dr. W said he's doing fine and he'll be licking gramma's eyebrows for many mornings to come.

ReplyDeleteI, too, am sorry to hear the bad news about Smudge. I know that I'd be very concerned, too, if one of my children was ill; but, don't give up hope. There may yet be treatment options that the Vet, and you, can provide for Smudge that may let him live, (without him suffering), those ten or more years with you that you had hoped. I pray to the Good Lord that this is indeed the case.
ReplyDeleteDee
Oh, Smudge will be on our purrayer list! Hope the vet can help him live longer and without pain. Snuggle together a lot. That will help a little.
ReplyDeleteOh, dear, Smudge we are worried about you ... we hope there's something your v-e-t can recomend that will help alleviate the kidney failure symptems. Our brother Patrick was in a research study on kidney failure at the v-e-t school and took medicine for several years and our humans got real good at giving him fluids. We've only been around for a few months, so we haven't known you very long. We've been reading your archives with our Lady and, besides loving all 4 of you adorable fluffs, we love your people too.
ReplyDeletePlease get better Smudge.
Purrs!
My mom and I are praying for you and your family Smudge. My sister Katie went to the Bridge last night so we know how much your heart is breaking. But it sounds like you have a good vet and our stabby guy helped Katie beat the odds and stay with us for over a year after they found her cancer. Keep fighting Smudge, you are surrounded by love and prayers.

just wanted to say real quick that sometimes with CRF you have to do subcutaneous fluids at home. wanted to tell you if that's the case, don't be afraid of it. we had a beloved kitty, Goodi and we subq'd him for a long time. he didn't mind it, and it was a lot easier than we expected. always happy to share info. our prayers are with all of you, hoping Smudge will rally.
ReplyDeleteOh, we are sending our bestest thoughts and prayer for your dear Smudge.
ReplyDeletePurrayers and headbutts for you Smudge.

I'm sorry I couldn't leave you a comment last night. My sister Sophie had CRF, so this news made us very sad. My mom wanted me to tell you that she found this site helpful when Sophie was first diagnosed: Feline CRF Information Center.
ReplyDeleteIf you have any questions about treatment or just want to talk, please write (wmthecat at netscape dot net) and I'll make sure Mom gets your mail.
I am so sorry to hear about Smudge, but some of the other comments sound encouraging. Here's hoping that Smudge has many years ahead of him yet.
ReplyDeleteOh Smudge we is so sorry for your 'beans. They are not going to know what to do wifout your guidance. We hopes you are feeling okay and not in a lot of pain ~Merlin, Shadow, KO ko
ReplyDeleteCRF isn't an automatic death sentence. Moose was diagnosed with CRF at the age of four. The Mom did daily fluid treatments with him and he lived until he was nine. The V-E-T said that at max he would only live an additional four years. Because of the Mom's love and caring he lived for five. Talk to the V-E-T and see what your options are. Either way, our prayers will be with you.
ReplyDeletesmudge - I hope you is feeling better soon and that your beans are okay. Hang in there little buddy. I will be saying my purrrrraays for you and hope for an update soon.
ReplyDeleteWe ofur at ManxMnews will keep Smudge in our thoughts and purrayers. We hope that there is a good option for treatment.
