Who is the Smartest Cat in Your House?

We have four(five) cats in our house, each has a personality. One that that is unique to each of the little furrballs. One is a Soldier, a Defender, a Knight who knows no fear. One is Lover (Healer) who gives his heart and strength to whoever needs it most. One is a Thinker. To look into her eyes is to look into the eye piece of the Hubble telescope (I see the stars and see what lays beyond.) I did not know what to call Dolce when she blessed our threshold. She is my Scientist. Everything is a problem to her and every problem has a solution. They just take time and thought. Baci is just a blank slate. I think he is waiting for whatever instructions Dolce gives him.

I have pictures of one of my Honey-Do work items. I had hoped to post it as a blog item, but my Scientist, Dolce, has figured out my most devious puzzle.

I put a cat door into the door leading into our garage. Since our cats seemed to enjoy exploring our garage as much as they enjoyed exploring the back yard, we had always planned on putting a cat door in.

I finally got around to it after much guidance and reminding from my dear wife.

Imagine a hole in a door (picture to follow)

Then imagine a nice plastic door neatly attached (picture to follow)

Now we tried to train our furrkids to use the catdoor...

We held it open and each of our cats used it to go out into the garage. We even held it open so that they would get used to coming back into the house.

We have one smart cat, our newly designated Scientist, Dolce. She has started to go in and out through the door to the garage. Her best friend, Baci, cries to follow her. We are hopeful that his bond with her will lead him to mimic her actions.

Magoo and Bella may clue in and follow the "Tweens", but we do not care. Each cat in our house has a path to follow and it is our job as the "intelligent" species to manage to their expectations.

Live long, Purr Strong.

Pee Ess. Dad is trying to finish the "Littlest Guardian Story". Actually it is finished in his head, but he is having some issues whether to end on a happy note or a realistic note. He would prefer a happy note, but what is the purpose of a story if it does not leave the reader with some guidance.

  1. ME! I SMARTEST!! - Bill

MeezerMom here- Miles is the smartest cat I have ever known. As much as I loved Trixie and Ralphie with my whole heart and soul, they were really, er, not very smart at all. I thought Norton was brilliant. and he was, compared to his brother and sister. But Miles, well, you can see the wheels turning every time you look him in the eye. He's a genius. poor Sammy, after 4 years he has finally figured out how to push open a door that's not latched. He got stuck in Bill's pen - without the top on it. He jumped in. He could not figure out how to get out. which amazed me because when he had to stay in the pen as a kitten it took him all of 10 seconds to figure it out. Then again, he may be brilliant because he knows if he cries I will rescue him. We will have to wait and see about Bill. He follows Miles around like he's Miles' pet.

  3. I know Mom and Dad have discussed a cat door going to a closet with our litter box, but I know I'm not a big fan of going through those types of doors, as one of my old litter boxes had a flap that Dad had to remove for me to use it. But we'd love a door to our garage, except that Mom and Dad would be afraid we'd go out when the big door was open.

  4. Our litter boxes have doors on them. We all like them. Seaborne probably wouldn't fit in a small door....Hee Hee!

    Seaborne: "Hey, that's not funny!"

  5. Smartest? That's got to be Midnight. Grr is a scared semi-feral bully. Rascal and Riley are still figuring themselves out. I think Rascal wants to be a Superhero. Riley acts like she wants to take over the world, but she lets every other cat bully her. Cocoa knows exactly how to get what he wants, and he works until he gets it, but he doesn't care one bit about any other cat's interests. Midnight, on the other hand, manipulates everyone - cats and human. She knows exactly what to do to make the entire household react the way she wants. You can practically see her planning her next move. Plus, she's the only one who holds a grudge and will punish you for whatever you did to offend her.

  6. Dolce, we always knew you were the smart, logical scientific one. Scout is the same way. He always comes up with a way to get to what he wants.

  7. Hi Magoo, Smudge, Bella & Dolce,

I'm the only cat at my house, so I guess that makes me the smartest, the cutest and the best cat in the household.

I also want to tell you (and all your friends) that I’ve written a scathingly-funny book, The World Is Your Litter Box, which will be out May 6th. The book is cleverly disguised as a cute cat book so humans will buy it, but is, in fact, a how-to manual FOR cats. Check it out on my website, http://www.theworldisyourlitterbox.com.

  8. I think it is great you let your kitties have their own purpose. Each of us is different and that is what makes us special. Truly loving beans let us be who we are and love us just for that!

  9. yeah, but we say end happy. The world has enough sad parts.

Fergus was the smartest cat I ever knew. He could figure out anything. He knew his name from the minute I told him "You shall be Fergus"

But Brendan was the wisest creature I have ever known, including people.

Harper, I think, is growing into a Lover. And Ramona is a Healer. We always said her motto was "I really care." One night Brendan sneezed from the bedroom and Ramona hopped up with concern in her eyes and ran into the room to be sure he was allright.

  11. oh cat doors are wonderful. we have three. one goes into the kitty condo, which is our protected area outside. the other goes from the kitchen onto our screened in back porch. the third goes from the back porch to ramp that leads to the BACK YARD. only the kitchen one is always open. my Mom opens the condo one in the morning and closes it when she goes to bed. and the one to the YARD is only open sometimes, during the day, when my Mom is home and can "keep an eye" on us.
